Virginia, officially the┬áCommonwealth of Virginia, is a state in the┬áSoutheastern┬áand┬áMid-Atlantic┬áregions of the United States located between the┬áAtlantic Coast┬áand the┬áAppalachian Mountains. The geography and climate of the┬áCommonwealth┬áare shaped by the┬áBlue Ridge Mountains┬áand the┬áChesapeake Bay, which provide habitat for much of its flora and fauna. The capital of the Commonwealth is┬áRichmond;┬áVirginia Beach┬áis the most populous city, and┬áFairfax County is the most populous political subdivision. The Commonwealth’s estimated population as of 2018┬áis over 8.5 million.

The area’s history begins with┬áseveral indigenous groups, including the┬áPowhatan. In 1607 the┬áLondon Company┬áestablished the┬áColony of Virginia┬áas the first permanent┬áEnglish colony┬áin the┬áNew World. Virginia’s state nickname, the Old Dominion, is a reference to this status. Slave labor and the land acquired from displaced Native American tribes each played a significant role in the colony’s early politics and plantation economy. Virginia was one of the┬á13 Colonies┬áin the┬áAmerican Revolution. In the┬áAmerican Civil War, Virginia’s┬áSecession Convention┬áresolved to join the Confederacy, and Virginia’s┬áFirst Wheeling Convention┬áresolved to remain in the Union; that led to the creation of┬áWest Virginia. Although the Commonwealth was under┬áone-party rule┬áfor nearly a century following┬áReconstruction, both major national parties are competitive in modern Virginia.

The┬áVirginia General Assembly is the oldest continuous law-making body in the New World.┬áThe state government was ranked most effective by the┬áPew Center on the States┬áin both 2005 and 2008.[9]┬áIt is unique in how it treats cities and counties equally, manages local roads, and prohibits its governors from serving consecutive terms. Virginia’s economy has many sectors: agriculture in the┬áShenandoah Valley; federal agencies in┬áNorthern Virginia, including the headquarters of the┬áU.S. Department of Defense┬áand┬áCentral Intelligence Agency┬á(CIA); and military facilities in┬áHampton Roads, the site of the┬áregion’s main seaport.
